Hatfield QE RFC Appoint New Head Coach

Hatfield Queen Elizabeth Rugby Club has appointed Gary Phillips as it’s new head coach for the 2017/18 season with the aim of having a successful season in the league and cups.

The Roe Hill-based Club looked to Phillips as he seemed the best applicant that share the same goals as the club. Phillips has extensive coaching experience at various levels and runs his own successful rugby coaching company dealing with numerous schools and clubs in Hertfordshire.

Club Chairman, Toby Garrett had this to say about Phillips’ appointment: “Garry shares our vision of a vibrant, successful and community-based club drawing on all corners of the community and is enthusiastic about helping us grow the club along with his coaching remit.”

Phillips shares a history with Hatfield having being born and raised in the town. He is a former pupil of Onslow St Audrey’s School. In his playing days, Phillips has also pulled on the Hatfield Rugby Club shirt and played for the team.

“I’m a local boy that loves coaching. And saw the opportunity to coach senior rugby in my hometown and jumped at the chance. What I loved was when the Captain and Chairman said to me that the main aim is fun, and that’s what I want to bring to the club,” said Phillips. “I’ve only taken one session, but I’m pleased with the commitment of the players and hoping that together we can grow the club and bring success to Hatfield,” he added.

First Team Captain George Stone has also been encouraged by Phillips’ appointment. “We finished last season really strong, but with a new Head Coach we will be able to push on. I’m very excited about this season and the future of the club,” said Stone.

Preseason for the club has already begun with Phillips at the helm and everyone is welcome. The club is looking for more players of any ability, come along to training, which takes place at 19:30 on Thursdays at Roe Hill.
