Once again Hatfield started a game strong with the forwards dominating all areas of the park and they did remain the dominant force throughout the game but again the home side just couldn’t convert the possession into points and it was a full twenty five minutes before they managed to hold onto the ball long enough to get captain George Stone over the line.
The move started from the half way line with great passing out of tackles by most of the team taking them to the five yard line where the forwards took control and bullied the visitors the rest of the way for Stone to touch down.
Watford were strangled for the first sixty minutes, whenever they took possession of the ball it went nowhere; it was either spilled or kicked away, the young back line appearing clueless. Then, later in the second half another good phase of quick hands saw the home side manage to gain the yards with purpose; the ball passing from one side of the pitch to the other and back again.
The forwards again opting to keep it close forced their way down field where lock Damian Poulter chose the right time to break away and cross the line far out on the corner flag. A very difficult conversion by fly-half Mike Student had the Roe Hill club 14 points up, and with just fifteen minutes to go, the win seemed certain.
But, and as is seen all too often with this Hatfield club they took their foot off the pedal and allowed the visitors to storm back. The visitors managed two tries in quick succession; both stolen from rushed, unforced, almost panicked passing by the home side saw both tries scored right under the posts.
The second try came as Hatfield looked likely to score again, storming the visitors’ line but the ball was snaffled and their quick wing ran the length of the pitch. The first try was converted but Watford smelled the win, with just five minutes left, and forced the kicker to rush his second conversion so he opted to kick out of hand and the ball sailed wide; what was a certain kick for a draw missed for a two point loss. Hatfield simply ground out the final five minutes to take the win which sees them now second in the league table
